Why Exercise Doesn’t Work

Typically after new years, you decide to lose weight so you buy a gym membership. Afterwards you set a schedule and you force yourself to go to the gym 3 times per week. Sounds pretty normal right? The most common misconception is that the most effective way to lose weight is to stick to a rigorous exercise routine. Usually sticking to it until you reach the results you need. The truth is, exercise doesn’t work. Exercise has been proven to give almost no effect to weight loss. In some cases, it could cause you to gain more weight. Here’s why:

Why Exercise Doesn’t Work

Our bodies have a very specific system that they stick to. The body uses specific amounts of energy for each function. Food is responsible for 100% of the energy that our bodies consume and exercise only uses about 10% to 30% of that energy. That’s right! Exercise is only responsible for 10% to 30% of our weight loss. Food is stored as energy which is then used to power our bodily functions and anything left afterwards is stored as fat.

Our bodies use about 60% to 80% of that energy to power the background functions. The background functions are basically the things that go on that keep us alive like breathing and digestion.

Here is what Vox has to say on their site:

If a hypothetical 200-pound man added 60 minutes of medium intensity running four days per week while keeping his calorie intake the same, and he did this for 30 days, he’d lose five pounds. “If this person decided to increase food intake or relax more to recover from the added exercise, then even less weight would be lost,” Hall added. (More on these “compensatory mechanisms” later.)

So if one is overweight or obese, and presumably trying to lose dozens of pounds, it would take an incredible amount of time, will, and effort to make a real impact through exercise.

The best way to actually lose weight is to not overeat. Now, we are not suggesting that exercise is not important. Exercise is a vital part of being healthy and is highly recommended to do. Just don’t expect that to burn off your fat!
