staying mentally healthy
We can be bombarded with advice from everywhere and everyone about the importance of staying physically healthy. But what is frequently left unsaid is how important it is to stay mentally healthy as well. Many of us just stick to the grind of life. We focus on getting our tasks done without ever stopping to evaluate our individual stress levels. Unfortunately, not taking care of our mental health has negative consequences too. While there are many variables that affect our mental state here are a few basic ways of staying mentally healthy.
Staying Mentally Healthy
Get Enough Sleep
We have all heard by now that getting 7-8 hours is key, but few actually do. Of those who are diligent enough to block out this period of rest, many still aren’t getting it since they may lie awake at night going over to-dos or other stressors. Those who don’t fuel up on sleep are more likely to be agitated during the day. Day after day of this compounds and can increase the risk of a mood disorder or depression.
Exercise
It’s good for our bodies, yet working out is also good for our minds. Exercising is a beneficial way to stay mentally healthy in that it allows us to let off steam and burn away stress. Endorphins are a chemical that is released when exercising that has the effect of putting us in a better mood; therefore working out is a win-win!

Establish balance
Society seems to value and have the notion that working hard in a high-paying job results in happiness, but this isn’t necessarily true. More people are genuinely happy and mentally healthy when they can achieve balance in life. If you find that you work too much, you need to find a way to integrate more activities of leisure. If you are constantly around people all day you may need to find a way to carve some time out for yourself. Even spending a few minutes doing simple activities like coloring or putting together a jigsaw puzzle can allow you to unwind and can alleviate stress.
Talk to someone
The idea of talking to someone about personal problems can make some uneasy. Many cave into the fallacy that expressing anxiety is a weakness. However, others don’t have a trustworthy person with a listening-ear in their life. It may be wise to seek out professional help. Especially for those problems that seem monumental and are difficult to deal with alone. Even having a professional to touch base with every few weeks can help lessen the stress load and improve overall mental health.
We all want to live life to the fullest. But this can be difficult to do when stress is weighing down our shoulders. Follow these tips for staying mentally healthy. Learning to lighten this load will definitely enhance the quality of life!
