Your skin is especially vulnerable in winter. In addition to a rosy glow in the cheeks, winter also brings uncomfortable dryness to the skin. The cold outside plus the heat inside can be unforgiving to your skin, a vicious cycle that you can do something to prevent! Read through these winter skin care tips.

8 Winter Skin Care Tips

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize more!

Remember the moisturizer you used in spring and summer? It’s time for a change. Your choice of moisturizer can either protect your skin from dryness or lead to excessive dryness. An oil based moisturizer is best for protecting your skin against the harsh winter weather while a water-based moisturizer is not good for your skin during winter.
Moisturize at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Wash in lukewarm water

While standing in a hot shower on a cold day feels so amazing, it doesn’t do much justice to your skin. This is because hot water drys out your skin. Use lukewarm water instead of hot water to avoid stripping essential oils away from your skin.

Drink lots of water

Keep your body hydrated in winter as much as you do in summer. Water maintains a fluid balance in your body which contributes to your overall health. Water keeps your skin hydrated.

Wear protective gear

Protective gear includes scarves, gloves, and sunscreen. Oh yes, sunscreen isn’t just for summer. It protects your skin from winter sun which can be very damaging to the skin.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation frees your skin off dead skin cells especially on your face and hands mainly caused by dryness. Your moisturizer won’t work if there are plentiful dead cells on your skin. You can use exfoliating body scrubs or a mask readily available in a store close to you.

Install a humidifier

Heating systems quickly drys out the air in your home during the cold months. A humidifier, on the other hand, adds more moisture in the air preventing your skin from drying out and making it easier for you to breath better. You can use an extra large humidifier throughout your entire home or a smaller one for individual spaces.

Change Your Cleanser

In the cold months, switch your cleanser with one that contains moisturizing ingredients. Avoid cleaners that contain glycolic or salicylic acid as they can be extremely drying to the skin. After using a cleanser, apply a hydrating toner followed by a moisturizer to seal in moisture.

Eat healthy

Eat foods that contain more nutrients and antioxidants to retain a glow in your skin. These foods include almonds, broccoli, avocado, olive oil, dark chocolate, green tree among others.

When you feel the cold coming in just remember or save these winter skin care tips. The cold won’t stand a chance!
