We play games on our cell phones.  We update our profiles and surf the web.  And we certainly text on our cell phones.  But many don’t know that there are an abundant of smartphone apps that can be used for enhancing our mental wellness.  Many of these tools are free and can provide immediate stress relief.  Some apps can  even lead to long-term, positive results in mental health.

There are a variety of apps that can help those get in that state of relaxation through meditating.  Whether you are a novice and need guided meditation, or are experienced and just need some relaxing sounds that support deep breathing, most app stores offer a comprehensive selection.  Many have found that by downloading a meditation app onto their phone they are more likely to meditate.  As a result, those who frequently use these apps feel calmer and less stressed overall.

You may feel like you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, and a stress test can help assess your stress levels.  Many of the stress test apps will ask you a series of questions about how you handle situations or how certain things in life affect you.  Then at the end of the test your score will be tabulated and a brief assessment will generalize how you handle stress. For the sake of our sanity and mental wellness, sometimes we just need to take a break.  App stores offer a myriad of puzzles, games, and activities that are good for de-stressing.  Coloring therapy, apps with peaceful sounds, and simple puzzles can provide hundreds of ways to take a break.  Doing these activities for even a few minutes can help you return to life with a clearer head.

 

Those with severe anxiety, depression, and mood swings should seek the help of a licensed therapist.  But since we can’t always have a mental health professional on hand –and we usually have our phones in our hands– utilizing mental health apps can help us feel happier and achieve a better state of mental wellness.
