Do you suffer from dark circles under your eyes? The number one cause of dark circles and puffy eyes is sleep deprivation. Although the average adult is supposed to sleep 8 hours a day, most of us are getting an average of 6. Our busy lives tend to lead to staying up late and then getting up early. Rinse and repeat! And then the weekend is spent making the most of your time off, running errands, and taking care of all those things you never go to during the week. Other causes can be genetics, nutrient deficiencies, medications, and alcohol.

So what to do?! With a little magic and some useful tips, you can hide your sleepy circles until you are able to catch up on sleep!

IF YOU HAVE PUFFY EYES

What’s the Cause: The female body, when tired retains water. The tissues swell up, and fluids pool around your eyes even more.

5-minute fix: Try massaging your eyes in the morning with a brightening eye cream like Olay Fresh Effects Bright On Schedule Eye Awakening Cream ($13, at drugstores). Moisturizer helps to hydrate and plump up the skin under your eyes. Try to avoid applying concealer and dark eye makeup – this will make your eyes look worse! Curling your lashes with and swiping on a couple coats of volumizing mascara can also make a world of difference. This technique is very popularly used with makeup artists on drowsy models.

IF YOU HAVE RACCOON EYES (AKA DARK CIRCLES)

What’s the Cause: We all hate this one! Dark circles are actually caused by broken capillaries and blood vessels showing through the thin skin under our eyes, and being tired makes it more obvious.

5-minute fix: Concealer solution! Apply a orange-hued corrector like Eve Pearl Dual Salmon Concealer ($39, evepearl.com)—which comes in shades for all skin tones, this counteracts the blue tones from the vessels underneath your skin and normalizes your complexion. Next, mix in a liquid or cream concealer with some loose powder that matches your skin tone, or is a slight shade lighter and apply it under your eyes. The powder is added to improve the coverage and preventing a caked-up look.

Long Term Solutions: Trying to get more sleep is the most obvious solution, but also try to hone in on the reasons that you are getting baggy eyes so that you can prevent it in the future and apply proper solutions. If your eyes are especially prone to puffiness or dark circles during allergy season, try taking an over the counter antihistamine to prevent blood from pooling. Also, it is highly recommended to not rub your eyes. If your dark circles are hereditary, you can always also try some retinol creams at your local Walgreens or drug store – these can help to build collagen and make the skin more opaque.
