Most people take care of their skin, watch what they eat and make themselves look pretty. But one thing that everyone neglects is sleep. For some unknown reason, people seem to think that sleep is not important. The one fact everyone should know is that sleep is as important as any other body function like eating, exercise, thinking etc, and when not having enough sleep, the quality of life can be very poor.

Side Effects Of Not Having Enough Sleep

Sleep is vital for everyone as this is the time when the body rejuvenates itself. All the damage during the day is repaired and the brain is cleared of all the junk that has accumulated. Here are some things that can result after not having enough sleep.

Fatigue

The number one complaint in people who do not get enough sleep is fatigue which worsens during the day. Often this fatigue is associated with poor concentration, forgetfulness and lack of drive. At work, this results in poor productivity and at school, poor academic performance.

Accidents

Not having enough sleep is one of the major causes of accidents on the roads and at work. There are countless cases of people who have not slept and caused serious accidents resulting in deaths. Operating machinery without sleep is also a deadly combination. You can lose judgment, one is unable to make decisions, solve problems and there is loss of concentration.

Performance

People who lack this necessity often can’t learn and usually are rock bottom when it comes to academic performance.

Heart disease

There is ample evidence indicating that lack of sleep is also associated with a higher risk of heart disease.

Decreased libido

While people who sleep may stay awake all night and get to party all night, they usually are not able to perform in bed. This can cause loss of libido in both men and women. It takes away the desire to have sex and in fact, some partners even fall asleep during this social encounter.

Behavior problems

People who lack sleep on a regular basis are often moody, irritable and volatile. They have difficulty with interpersonal and inter-professional relationships. Studies show that being constantly tired can cause anxiety and a depressed mood. On a positive note, when sleep is restored the mood disturbances disappear and you become nice once again, unless you were a jerk to begin with.

Premature aging

Like smoking, and excess sun exposure, lack of sleep can make you look a lot older than your stated age. One very common reason for tired eyes, frown lines and wrinkles on the face is poor sleep hygiene. During stress, several hormones are released (eg steroids), which cause loosening of the tissues and loss of elasticity. Even Botox does not help- the only cure for the aging phenomenon is to develop good sleep hygiene.

Weight Gain

People who are chronically tired often are active but they tend to eat a lot more junk food to help them stay awake. Some of the foods that people eat when tied are the sugary and fast foods, and gallons of alcohol. This combination adds more useless calories, which eventually increases the waist line.

Premature Death

Not to sound too drastic but a lack of this important necessity has also been associated with sudden death. There are ample studies showing that people who lack sleep are often stressed and one day they just drop dead.

The best way to avoid the problems associated with not having enough sleep is to develop good sleep hygiene. Experts recommend at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. So if you do not want to look like a grandpa or a grandma with wrinkles and dementia at age 30, better start developing some good sleep habits.
